The Best Homemade Mosquito Repellants

If we have herbs in our room, we will scare away the mosquitoes. Basil is often used as a border in vegetable gardens, because its scent repels insects.

Even if various studies seem to affirm that mosquitoes bite a specific type of people more (some involve blood, others sweat), it is absolutely necessary to prevent them from settling in the house. And what better than natural mosquito repellants to fight them!

Homemade and natural mosquito repellents

So we are going to describe to you some of the most effective recipes to get rid of those unbearable mosquitoes so that they do not come to spoil a peaceful night or a dinner on the terrace.

Their advantage is that they are homemade and made from natural ingredients, so you can use them without fear if you have children or if you are allergic .

Clove-based mosquito repellent

It is said to be the most effective product to scare them away. You will need baby shampoo, a quart of water and thirty cloves. Make an infusion with the water and the clove, filter it and pour it into the shampoo until the mixture is homogeneous.

Apply it on the parts where the skin is exposed and mosquitoes can bite (arms, face, feet).

Eucalyptus-based mosquito repellent

For this recipe you will need 250 grams of eucalyptus leaves and a liter of water. Boil these two ingredients for 45 minutes so that the leaves can release all their essence. Pour this still hot liquid in the damp areas of the house and especially at the embrasures of doors and windows.

The ingredients are: 100 ml of sweet almond oil, 20 drops of geranium oil and 20 drops of basil oil. Mix these three ingredients and apply them to the skin.

Mosquito repellent with lavender

You need 100 ml of lavender oil and a moisturizer for the skin. Mix these two ingredients well and apply them directly. You will have a feeling of freshness and you will be safe from mosquitoes!

Citronella mosquito repellent

It is said to be one of the products that repels mosquitoes and other insects the most. You can find this oil in spray, lotion, and small wipes to keep mosquitoes from bothering you and your family.

Eucalyptus Mosquito Repellent (Recipe # 2)

Eucalyptus essential oil has a very pleasant aroma and is effective in repelling mosquitoes. Apply it to the skin every six hours. You can mix it with rosemary, pennyroyal, basil and lemon oils to enhance its action.

Oil and alcohol based mosquito repellent recipe

Chemicals can be bad for you and your family. This is why natural mosquito repellants are the best option! In addition, it is proven that they are the best and especially the most economical. Here are the ingredients for a great and popular recipe to ward off mosquitoes, flies, fleas and ticks:

  • Between 10 and 25 drops of essential oil (cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus, lemongrass or castor)
  • 2 tablespoons of oil (olive, sunflower or corn) or 2 tablespoons of 96 ° alcohol or vodka

Mix the two oils you have chosen or one oil with the alcohol. Rub directly the skin, or your cloth, with this oil. Take care not to get it in the eyes, nose or mouth.

Reapply it every hour if you bathe or exercise, or if you’ve been sweating in the sun. Keep the insecticide vial in a cool, dark place. To give it more consistency, you can add aloe vera oil.

Some additional tips to scare away mosquitoes

  • Place mint leaves in the patio, in the garden or inside the house. You can crush them by adding a few drops of water to them so that they give off more odor.
  • Always have pots of fresh basil (it can be grown easily in small pots) and place them in the rooms so that mosquitoes do not enter. This aromatic plant displeases insects: this is why it is also used as a living hedge in vegetable gardens.
  • Put a little water in a container and add a few cloves of garlic cut into pieces. Leave to macerate for a few hours and pour this liquid into a spray bottle. Spray it all over the house, especially on curtains and on door and window frames. The sulfur in garlic repels mosquitoes, flies, ticks and fleas.
  • Consume good amounts of vitamin C every day, especially if you live outdoors. It is soluble and does not accumulate in the body; you will sweat more and insects hate sweat.
  • Place a glass of vinegar near the window. Its strong smell will drive away insects that won’t want to approach it, let alone enter the house!
  • Eat foods rich in vitamin B like lentils, almonds, and mushrooms.
  • Use basil as a fly repellent.
  • Other oils can be used as mosquito repellants: castor, rosemary, pine, verbena, clove, geranium and cedar oil.
